K-W Braves hit early to top Mountaineers

KITCHENER – A four-goal outburst in the first period started the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves on their way to an 11-6 victory over the Mimico Mountaineers in Ontario junior A lacrosse league play Thursday night at Kinsmen Arena.

The outburst gave K-W a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period and the Braves stretched that advantage to 7-3 by the end of the second.

Spencer Pyke hit for four goals for the Braves while Scott DelZotto, Jackson Reid and John Nay each had two and Brody Mclean scored the other goal. Tye Kurtz had five assists and DelZotto had four, goaltender Steven Orleman three and Zack Dybowski, Devyn Orpana, Lucas Snider, Daire Newbrough, Quinn Commandant and Mclean one apiece.

Payton Cormier scored twice for Mimico while single goals were added by Gareth Haigh, Josh Toguri, Thomas McConvey and Jonathan Peshko. McConvey picked up four assists and Justin Scott had two while single assists were awarded to Jackson Suboch, Cormier, Alec Simons and Colin Grimes.

The Braves were outshot 42-37 and they scored the game’s only power-play goal. They had six power plays and the hosts held Mimico scoreless on three power plays.

Orleman made 36 saves for the win while Riley Hutchcraft was tagged with the loss for Mimico. He made 26 saves.

With the win the Braves move into a tie for second at 4-2-0. The Burlington Chiefs lead at 5-12-0 while Toronto Beaches is also at 4-2-0 and the Whitby Warriors are at 4-4-0. Mimico’s record dropped to 3-3-0 with the loss.

The Braves are to play the Brampton Excelsiors (3-1-0) at Brampton’s Century Gardens Friday at 8:30 p.m.
