K-W starts quick, but needs third-period goals for win

INNISFIL – The Kitchener-Waterloo Braves scored the first six goals of the game, but needed four goals in the first half of the third period to hand the Barrie Lakeshores an 11-7 setback in Ontario junior A lacrosse league play Sunday night at the Innisfil Recreation Centre.

The win put an end to a six-game losing streak for K-W.

The Braves led 5-0 at the end of the first period before Barrie battled back for a 6-6 stalemate at the end of the second.

Devyn Orpana hit for a hat trick for the Braves while Spencer Pyke had a pair of goals. Getting one goal apiece were Curtis Hall, Scott DelZotto, Jake Stevens, Trent DiCiccio, Zack Dybowski and Tye Kurtz. DelZotto collected five assists while Kurtz had four, Jackson Reid, Pyke and Kyle Driscoll had two apiece and Stevens, Daire Newbrough and DiCiccio had one each.

Brett Handsor netted two goals for Barrie while Devlin Kauffeldt, Brenden Welsh, John Buchan, Carson Moyer and Liam McCrory each scored once. Welsh and Jakob Power had three assists each and Joe Connor, Kauffeldt, Matthew Acchione and Cameron Acchione had one each.

K-W outshot Barrie 49-43 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while Barrie went 1-for-2.

Cole Martin picked up the win in the K-W net as he made 36 saves. Ethan Woods made 38 saves for Barrie and took the loss.

The win lifts K-W to 5-8-0 while Barrie dropped to 2-11-0.

The Braves are to host the Orangeville Northmen (10-4-0) Thursday at 8 p.m. at Kinsmen Arena.
