Kitchener knocks Storm out of OHL playoffs

GUELPH – Three goals in the first half of the second period helped the Kitchener Rangers put an end to the Guelph Storm’s Ontario Hockey League season.

A 5-2 win by Kitchener Sunday at the Sleeman Centre gave the Rangers a 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final. It was the first time a game in the series was won by the visiting team.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Kitchener was ahead 4-2 at the end of the second.

Ryan Merkley and Isaac Ratcliffe scored the goals for Guelph while assists went to Nate Schnarr and Ratcliffe.

Logan Brown had two goals for Kitchener while singletons were netted by Givani Smith, Riley Damiani and Joseph Garreffa. Getting one assist each were Kole Sherwood, Brown, Logan Stanley, Smith, Greg Meireles, Adam Liška, Adam Mascherin and Connor Bunnaman.

Kitchener outshot the Storm 32-31 and the Rangers were scoreless on two power plays while Guelph went 1-for-3 on its power play.

Anthony Popovich took the loss in net for the Storm. He had 27 saves while Kitchener winning goalie Mario Culina had 29 saves.

Kitchener advances to play the Sarnia Sting in a conference semifinal while the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Owen Sound Attack are to play in the other conference semifinal.

The Eastern Conference semifinals pit the Hamilton Bulldogs against the Niagara IceDogs and the Barrie Colts against the Kingston Frontenacs.
