Kitchener Rangers leave Storm behind

GUELPH – The Kitchener Rangers scored the first four goals of the game on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday at the Sleeman Centre.

Kitchener scored the only goal of the first period and led 4-0 after the second.

Fedor Gordeev and MacKenzie Entwistle scored in the third for the Storm while assists went to Zachary Roberts, Liam Hawel, Markus Phillips and Owen Lalonde.

Riley Damiani led Kitchener with a goal and three assists while Greg Meireles had a goal and two assists and Joseph Garreffa had a goal and an assist. Jonathan Yantsis and Rickard Hugg also scored a goal apiece and Ryan Stepien and Mike Petizian each had one assist.

Kitchener outshot Guelph 31-27 and went 3-for-7 in the playoffs while the Storm was scoreless on five power plays.

Anthony Popovich was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net. He had 26 saves while winning goaltender Luke Richardson had 25 saves for Kitchener.

The Storm, 37-18-6-4, will finish fourth in the Western Conference while the Rangers, 32-29-3-1, are a win away from clinching fifth and a conference quarter-final date with the Storm.

Guelph has three games on its schedule during the final week of the regular season.

They’re to host the Western Conference-leading London Knights (45-13-6-1) Wednesday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.

They’re also to host the Erie Otters (26-34-3-1) Friday at the Sleeman Centre starting at 7:30 p.m. The Storm and Otters are to meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Erie Insurance Arena.

The Otters are ninth in the division with four games to play. They’re two points behind the Windsor Spitfires and three behind the Sarnia Sting.
