Last-minute goal gives Patriots win over Mitchell

MITCHELL – Michael Stefanelli’s goal with 32 seconds to go in the third period lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 4-3 victory over the Mitchell Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Mitchell arena.

The Patriots had scored the only goal of the first period, but a goal by the host Hawks with 16 seconds to go in the second period left the score tied 3-3.

Jack Birkett, call-up Brock Mckenzie, Klayton Hoelscher and Stefanelli hit for a goal apiece for the Patriots while Ryley Cribbin and Hoelscher each had two assists and Thomas Haffner and Troy Weber had one apiece.

Ethan Hill, Kaden Hoggarth and Jake Finlayson responded with the goals for Mitchell. Assists went to Nathan Hall, Aaron Skinner, Riley Keupfer, Jarett Bogdon and Dylan Nafziger.

The Patriots outshot Mitchell 45-31 and scored on one of their two power plays while Mitchell was scoreless on three power plays.

Aidan Quish picked up the win in the Mount Forest net with 28 saves. Ryan Govier was charged with the loss. He made 41 saves for Mitchell.

The Patriots are second in the Pollock Division at 24-9-1-0 while Mitchell is fifth at 11-20-1-2.

Mount Forest is to play the seventh-place Goderich Flyers (8-21-1-3) at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex Saturday at 7:35 p.m. in their second of three consecutive road games. They’re also to play the fourth-place Hanover Barons (13-17-2-3) at Hanover Friday night.
