
Late goal gives Ross top spot in field hockey loop
GUELPH – The Ross Royals connected for a goal late in their final game of the District 4/10 girls’ field hockey league’s regular season to edge the Orangeville Bears and claim top spot in the eight-team league.
Leah Penner scored with about five minutes to play in Wednesday afternoon’s game at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field.
Helena Born picked up the shutout.
The two teams had both been unbeaten at the start of the game and they were assured of finishing in the top two positions.
Ross finished first at 7-0-0 while Orangeville was second at 5-1-1. They’re followed by the Centre Wellington Falcons at 3-1-3, Bishop Macdonell Celtics at 2-3-2, Centennial Spartans at 2-4-1, Centre Dufferin Royals at 1-3-3, Guelph CVI Green Gaels at 1-4-2 and Wellington Heights Wolverines at 0-5-2.
The playoffs are to begin next Wednesday with the quarter-finals while the semifinals are to be played Oct. 17 and the final is to go Oct. 19.
All playoff games are to be at Varsity Field.

Monday, Orangeville had goals by Brianna Price, Eden Gowing, Addison Skinkle and Ana Dimovska. Haidee Marinko had the shutout.

Bishop Mac’s Jenna Reia scored the lone goal of Monday’s game and Giuliana Koledin had the shutout.
