Late goal lifts field hockey Gryphs to tie with York

TORONTO – Abigail Warriner’s fourth-quarter goal salvaged a tie for the Guelph Gryphons as they battled the York Lions to a 1-1 deadlock in OUA women’s field hockey play Friday at York’s Alumni Field.

The hosts had opened the scoring at 3:06 of the first quarter and that goal stood as the game’s only marker until Guelph’s goal at 9:20 of the fourth 15-minute quarter.

York carried the play in the first half while the second half was a fairly even affair. The Lions outshot the Gryphs 12-3 with each team getting two shots in the second half. Each team also had three shots that reached the net.

The Lions also took eight of the game’s 11 penalty corners while York was called for the game’s only foul.

Lexi Hannah scored for York, with help from Elyse Ives.

Goalkeepers were Nicola Leech for the Gryphs and Serena Vilde for the Lions.

The tie was the second of the season for the Gryphs who also have a win.

The Gryphs are to host the McGill Redbirds Sunday at 10 a.m. at Varsity Field.
