Late goal lifts Mohawks to win over Owen Sound

FERGUS – The Elora Mohawks struck for the winning goal with 3:20 to go in the third period to edge the Owen Sound Northstars 9-8 in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Thursday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

While the Mohawks never trailed, the goal by affiliate player Nate Renaud allowed the hosts to claim victory in the game they had led by four goals in the second period.

The Mohawks led 4-2 at the end of the first period and 7-4 after the second.

Tobias Wilson had a hat trick for Elora while single goals were netted by Owen Tovell, Carter Coffey, Renaud, Jabe Verbeek, Keegan Detweiler and Brinley Wilson who also had three assists. Getting two assists apiece were JJ Lavigne and Renaud while goalkeeper Xavier Demichele, Coffey, Brock Redwood, Tobias Wilson, Verbeek and Detweiler each had one assist.

Curtis Arnold picked up a hat trick for Owen Sound while Carter Moran had two and Travis Morrison, Tyson Morrison and Will Lewis scored once each. Joel Coghlin set up three of the goals while Moran had two assists and Arnold, Tyson Morrison and Lewis each had one assists.

Owen Sound outshot Elora 46-44 and was proficient on its power play, going 6-for-9. The Mohawks were 2-for-7 and did score a shorthanded goal.

Demichele had 38 saves for the Mohawks while Myles Playter had 35 for the Northstars.

The win was the third consecutive victory at home for the Mohawks who are to wrap up their four-game homestand Sunday.

The win also lifts Elora into a tie for first place in the Western Conference with the Six Nations Rebels. Six Nations has a game in hand and are a perfect 4-0-0 while the Mohawks are at 4-1-0, the lone loss coming to the Rebels. The Guelph Regals are third at 3-2-0 and are followed by the St. Catharines Athletics (2-0-0), Hamilton Bengals (2-1-0), Cambridge Highlanders (2-2-0), Windsor Clippers (1-1-0), Wallaceburg Red Devils (1-1-0), Owen Sound (1-2-0), London Blue Devils (1-3-0), Point Edward Pacers (0-4-0) and Welland Generals (0-4-0).

The Mohawks are to host Point Edward Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex. Elora opened its season with a 22-4 win over the Pacers at Point Edward April 23.
