Late goals give Gryphon hockey women win over StFX

GUELPH – A pair of goals in the final 65 seconds of the game lifted the Guelph Gryphons to a 3-1 victory over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women in preseason U Sports women’s hockey play Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs had trailed 1-0 until Chihiro Suzuki tallied on a power play for the hosts at 9:37 of the third period.

Abby Davies put the locals ahead with 1:05 to go and Alexie Olivier added an unassisted insurance goal with 24 seconds to play.

Davies assisted on Suzuki’s goal while Sydnie Miller assisted on the goal by Davies.

Kamdyn Switzer scored an unassisted goal for StFX at 14:05 of the second.

Martina Fedel picked up the win in net for the Gryphs as she had 18 saves. Jamie Johnson had 29 saves for StFX including 14 in the third period.

The Gryphs outshot the X-Women 32-19 and went 1-for-2 on their power play while StFX was scoreless on two power plays.

The win gives the Gryphs and win and a loss in overtime in their preseason outings.

The Gryphs have five more preseason games to go including a game Saturday against the Nipissing Lakers at North Bay.

They’re to open their regular season Oct. 20 with a home game against the Waterloo Warriors.
