Late goals push Rocks into WOAA league’s A final

SHELBURNE – The Elora Rocks scored twice in the final four minutes of the third period to claim a 6-4 victory over the Shelburne Muskies to win their Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league’s A semifinal Saturday night at the Centre Dufferin Sportsplex.

The victory gave the Rocks a 4-1 win in the best-of-seven series.

The Rocks had to come from behind to get the win as they trailed 3-1 at the end of the first period. Elora tied it with two goals in the second and took a lead just under eight minutes into the third. However, the hosts tied it a little over four minutes later.

Chad Herron’s goal with 3:57 to go proved to be the winner while Ed Gaffney added an insurance marker with 1:05 to go.

Justin Byers, Bradey Prosic, Lyam Cripps and Brock West scored the other goals for Elora.

Luke Richardson, Andrew Whalen, Ryan Hunter and Travis Knight had a goal apiece for Shelburne.

With the win the Rocks advance to play the winner of the other A semifinal between the Milverton 4-Wheel Drives and Tillsonburg Thunder. Milverton won 4-3 at Tillsonburg Saturday night to take a 3-2 lead in the series. Game 6 is set for Sunday night at Milverton.

If Tillsonburg wins Sunday night, Game 7 is to go Tuesday night at Milverton.

The A playoffs are for teams that finished ninth or lower at the end of the regular season.

Elora was 11th at 9-12-1-0 while Tillsonburg was ninth at 11-11-0-0, Shelburne 10th with the same record and Milverton 12th at 3-17-1-1.
