Lineup connects as Guelph Royals drop Brantford
BRANTFORD – Every Guelph batter got at least one hit as the Guelph Royals thumped the Brantford Red Sox 16-5 for their sixth consecutive Intercounty Baseball League victory Wednesday night at Brantford’s Arnold Anderson Stadium.
The victory kept the Royals in the last-week race for top spot in the league. They’re tied for second with the Welland Jackfish, a game and a half behind the leading London Majors and both Guelph and Welland have a game in hand on London.

The Majors lead at 30-10 with two games to play while the Royals and Jackfish are both at 28-11 with three games to go. The Royals have a three-in-three weekend coming up to complete their regular season while the Jackfish have three games in four days.
Most important of the three remaining games for the Royals is a Friday-night match against the Majors at London’s Labatt Park. Game time is 7:35 p.m.
Wednesday, the Royals clobbered 19 hits and scored runs in all but two innings in their whitewash of the basement-dwelling Red Sox. Brantford is 2-37 and will play whichever team finishes first in the best-of-five quarter-finals.
Using a lineup that was anything but a normal one, the Royals had that many hits that Claudio Custodio had seven at-bats in the game. He played shortstop and batted second, the Royals undoubtedly saving his arm for the Friday-night game in London. That would also make him available to pitch the opening game of the quarter-finals against either the Kitchener Panthers, Hamilton Cardinals or Brantford.
Dalton Pompey was moved to third in the lineup and he responded with three hits – two homers and a single – to drive in four runs.
Ashton Patterson was in the leadoff spot and he reached base five times. He hit a triple and a double, was walked once and was struck by a pair of pitches.
Brian Sewell, making his fifth appearance of the season, hit a double and two singles while Owen Ellis, called up from the Guelph Silvercreeks junior squad to make his IBL debut, also hit a double and two singles.
Malik Collymore hit a double and a single while Custodio and Darius Barlas each hit two singles and Noah Roberts, playing at first base, smacked his fourth homer of the season. Jeff MacLeod added a single.
Brandon Deans, making his third start of the season, picked up the win as he limited Brantford to two earned runs off six hits and a walk in five innings. He had 10 strikeouts and improved his record to 4-2.
Ben Braun allowed three runs, two earned, off two hits and two walks in two innings. He had three strikeouts in his third appearance for the Royals. He had five outings with Hamilton before the Cardinals let him go and he was subsequently picked up by the Royals.
Luke Barry and Ben Reid each pitched an inning. Barry gave up a hit and both he and Reid had a strikeout. It was the first outing in August for both.
Jamiel Orozco and Roger Keen each hit a double and single for Brantford while Nolan Gallagher connected for a pair of singles. Getting one single apiece were Nick Burdett, Aiden Colangelo and Andrew Gorecki.
Bennett Moore took the loss, dropping his record to 0-10. He yielded 10 earned runs off 13 hits and four walks in five innings. He had six strikeouts.
Alexander Gowing and Hayden Stam each pitched two innings. Gowing yielded two earned runs off a hit and no walks while Stam gave up four earned runs off five hits and three walks. Stam had a strikeout.
Proving that it takes a bit of time to score 21 runs between the two teams, the game took three hours and eight minutes to complete.
After the Friday-night game in London, the Royals are to complete their three-in-three and their regular season by hosting Brantford Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium and playing sixth-place Kitchener in a 2 p.m. game Sunday at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park.
The best-of-five quarter-finals are to start next week and the Royals will enjoy home-field advantage against whichever team they face.
