Lions and Gaels grab playoff berths in senior hoops

GUELPH – The St. James Lions and Guelph CVI Green Gaels secured berths in the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball league playoffs with victories Thursday.

The Lions defeated the Orangeville Bears 40-33 while the Gaels upended the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 51-31.

The result leaves the pair tied for second at 4-1 and also put them on a course to be semifinal opponents when the playoffs begin next Thursday.

The only thing left to be decided between the Lions and Gaels is which one will host that semifinal match. That is to be determined Tuesday when they meet at GCVI to complete their regular seasons.

Centennial Spartans clinched a playoff berth and first place earlier this week.

Either the Bishop Macdonell Celtics or Ross Royals will get the other playoff berth. They’re tied for fourth at 2-3. Bishop Mac is to play the Lourdes Crusaders at Lourdes Tuesday while Ross is to play at Centennial. If they end tied for fourth, Bishop Mac will get the playoff spot thanks to a season-opening 40-21 win over the Royals at Ross.

Whichever teams the fourth playoff berth is to play the Spartans at Centennial in the semifinals.
