Lions drop their opening game at provincial tournament

KINGSVILLE – The CWOSSA AA and District 10 champion St. James Lions suffered a setback in their opening game at the OFSAA provincial high school AA girls’ basketball championship tournament Thursday.

The 12th-seeded Lions were defeated 72-59 by the 10th-seeded Birchmount Park Panthers of Toronto in the 20-team tournament.

Birchmount Park pulled away in the second half for the win as the Panthers led 33-28 at halftime.

Scoring leaders were not available.

The Lions are to play fifth-seeded St. Mary Crusaders of Hamilton Friday at 9 a.m.

A win will put St. James into the quarter-finals Friday at 7 p.m. A loss would put the Lions into a 4 p.m. consolation quarter-final against 16th-seeded All Saints Titans of Whitby.
