Lions hang on for second win of soccer’s opening day
GUELPH – The St. James Lions scored three goals in the first half and then hung on for a 3-2 triumph over the Orangeville Scarlet Bears in District 10 girls’ soccer play Thursday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The game was the highest-scoring match of the league’s opening day of play.
Olivia Brown had two of the goals for the Lions while Laura Gemin scored the other one.
Orangeville got goals from Keira Pherson and Maeva Baldasarra.

Linnea Ramirez scored the game’s only goal.
Centre Wellington 1 Lourdes 0
Frances Walkensperg hit for the goal for Centre Wellington while Kaija Donaldson picked up the shutout.
Bishop Macdonell 1 Centennial 0
Georgia Merriman scored for Bishop Mac and Christine Alexander had the shutout.
Orangeville 1 Guelph CVI 1
Maeva Baldasarra had the goal for Orangeville and Olivia Puddephatt fired home GCVI’s goal.
Centennial 1 Lourdes 1
Jasmine Burke connected for the goal for Centennial while Maeve Nichol tallied for Lourdes.
Bishop Macdonell 1 Centre Wellington 0
Georgia Merriman hit for the lone goal of the game and Sam Stamp recorded the shutout for Bishop Mac.
Ross 1 Guelph CVI 1
Jordan Favari scored for Ross and Jessica Aspinall picked up the goal for GCVI.
