Lions, Spartans and Bears battle for second in senior hoops

GUELPH — Wins by the St. James Lions and Centennial Spartans Tuesday created a logjam for second place in the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball league standings.

The Lions edged the Orangeville Bears 47-46 while the Spartans dropped the Lourdes Crusaders 54-8.

Those results left Orangeville at 5-2 and Centennial and St. James both at 5-3.

Bishop Macdonell Celtics extended its lead with a 51-32 win over the Guelph CVI Green Gaels that left the Celtics at 8-0.

Jessica Zhu led Centennial with 12 points while Sydney Thomas netted nine.

Claire Arsenault had four for Lourdes.

Alicia Higgins hit for 13 points for Bishop Mac while Rachel Gaunzon added 10.

Maria Lukic collected 10 for GCVI while Cassidy Andrews gathered eight.

Ella Farelly had 20 points to lead St. James while Elivia Garbio contributed five.

Emilie Franz had 12 for Orangeville and Ella MacDonald picked up seven.

Josie Hayward had a game-high 19 points for Centre Wellington while B. Penton added 11.

B. Cracknell led Ross with 12 while Kyla O’Driscoll chipped in with seven.

Isabella Banni collected eight points for Lourdes.

Miren Oliver had nine for Centennial.
