Lions start senior girls’ volleyball season with victory
GUELPH — The St. James Lions opened the District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball season Tuesday by knocking off the Ross Royals 3-1 at Ross.
Both were champions of sorts in a pandemic shortened 2021-2022 season, Ross taking the league title with a win in the championship final March 29 and St. James winning the consolation final the same day with a win over Lourdes.
That entire season was held over a three-week period in March, wrapping up about a month after the season usually finishes.
Ignoring that short season, the Guelph CVI Green Gaels are the three-time defending champions as they won championship matches in 2018 to 2020 inclusive. The 2020-2021 season was wiped out by the pandemic.
Tuesday, the Lions turned the Royals aside by winning won 25-23, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21.
