Lions victorious in return to senior hoops loop

GUELPH – The St. James Lions made their return to competition in the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball league a winning one Tuesday when they downed the Ross Royals 48-29 at Ross.

The Lions had competed in a D10 senior girls’ basketball game since being ousted from the quarter-finals of the 2014 playoffs following a 4-10 season.

Tuesday, the Lions led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter and 23-19 at halftime before holding Ross scoreless in the third quarter to extend their lead to 40-19.

Lauralee MacKeigan led St. James with 16 points while Payton Cathcart and Grace Mencfeld added 13 apiece.

Sarah Hopkins struck for 15 points for Ross while Maryam Mohammed netted five.

 

Lourdes 31 Guelph CVI 29

Sami Romero connected for 14 points for Lourdes while Vanessa Codrington had 12.

Tina Qiu collected nine points for GCVI while Leksi Dawes and Cassidy Andrews chipped in with six apiece.

 

Bishop Macdonell 61 Centennial 25

Maja Gadzinska collected 12 points for Bishop Mac while Alicia Higgins followed with 11.

Jessica Zhu had nine points for Centennial and Amy Gray gathered six.

 

Junior

Orangeville 41 Centre Wellington 26

Emilie Franz led Orangeville with eight points while Emily Bell and Victoria Tesar had six apiece and Chandra Philips added five.

Kara den Hoed and Josie Hayward hit for six points apiece for Centre Wellington.

 

St. James 36 Ross 29

Ella Farrelly’s 17 points topped the scoring list for St. James while Elivia Garbuio added nine.

Emma Capper struck for 11 points for Ross while Koby Commandant had 10.

 

Guelph CVI 40 Lourdes 23

Olga Llander paced GCVI with 18 points while Eve Elford had 12.

Isabella Banni netted eight points for Lourdes.
