Lions volleyball girls split matches at OFSAA tournament

BELLEVILLE – The St. James Lions split their matches Monday on the first day of the OFSAA provincial high school AA girls’ volleyball championship tournament.

The 12th-ranked Lions dropped their first match 2-0 to fifth-ranked Father Michael McGivney Magic of Markham and rebounded for a 2-1 win over 18th-ranked Kingsville Cavaliers.

The Lions lost 25-10, 25-17 to Father McGivney and defeated Kingsville 25-21, 19-25, 15-9.

Tuesday, St. James is to play second-ranked Corpus Christi Longhorns of Burlington at 8:30 a.m. and 15th-ranked Silverthorn Spartans at 11:30 a.m. to wrap up pool play.

If the Lions finish in the top two in their pool, they’ll play at championship quarter-final at 6:30 p.m. If they finish third or fourth, they’ll play a consolation quarter-final at 4:30 p.m.

Corpus Christi leads Pool C at 3-0, the Lions and Silverthorn are 1-1, Father McGivney is 1-2 and Kingsville is 0-2.

The consolation and championship semifinals, consolation final, bronze-medal match and gold-medal match are scheduled for Wednesday.
