Listowel nets first three of game to down Hurricanes

LISTOWEL – The Listowel Cyclones scored the first three goals of the game on the way to a 5-2 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Listowel Arena.

The Cyclones led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 5-1 with nine minutes to go in the second period before the Canes added their final goal later in the period.

Ryan Sparkes and Liam Buckley scored once each for the Canes while Mason Sinkeldam and Anthony Mota each had an assist.

Holdyn Lansink, Jakob Lee, Mitch Deelstra, Steven Grant and Brady Anderson netted single goals for Listowel. Ben VanOoteghem assisted on two of the goals while Chet Phillips, Keaton Willis, Max Coyle, Garrett Russell, Lee and Brenden Clayton each had one assist.

Jet Greaves was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net as he faced 40 shots, nine more than winning netminder Max Wright of the Cyclones.

The Canes remain in a tie for fifth in the Midwestern Conference with the Brampton Bombers (9-11-0-0) and Kitchener Dutchmen (8-12-0-2). The Canes are at 7-12-1-3 while Listowel leads the division at 18-4-0-0.

The Canes and Dutchmen are to play Saturday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
