Locals out of Rival Series minor bantam A tourney

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals split a pair of games in the Guelph Minor Baseball Association’s Rival Series minor bantam A tournament Saturday at the Larry Pearson baseball complex and the loss was enough to keep them from advancing to Sunday’s semifinals.

Top team in each of the four divisions gained berths in the semifinals.

The Royals finished second in their division at 2-1, the loss coming Saturday morning against Welland by a 3-1 count. Welland won all three of its pool-play matches to get to stay around for the final day of the tournament.

Guelph also tripled Kawartha 9-3 Saturday afternoon.

Other teams advancing to the semifinals were Tecumseh, LaSalle and Erindale, all 3-0 in their pools.

The 9 a.m. semifinals Sunday feature Welland against Tecumseh and LaSalle going up against Erindale.

Winners advance to the 12:30 p.m. championship match.
