Loss squares Storm’s record at Memorial Cup

HALIFAX – Two goals in the second period proved to be the difference in the game as the Guelph Storm were doubled 4-2 by the host Halifax Mooseheads Sunday night at the Memorial Cup tournament at Halifax;s Scotiabank Centre.

The teams scored once apiece in the first and third periods while Halifax netted a pair of goals in the second.

The Storm never led in the game. Sean Durzi scored both goals, his second one on a power play at 1:07 of the third cut the gap to a single goal. However, Halifax restored its two-goal advantage six minutes later. Nick Suzuki, Nate Schnarr, Alexey Toropchenko and Dmitri Samorukov each had an assist for Guelph.

Scoring for Halifax were Antoine Morand, Raphael Lavoie, Maxim Trépanier and Samuel Asselin. Assists went to Jocktan Chainey, Arnaud Durandeau, Patrick Kyte, Ben Higgins, Keith Getson, Morand and Trépanier.

Halifax outshot the Storm 42-35 including a 20-9 advantage in the second period.

Anthony Popovich turned aside 38 shots for Guelph while Alexis Gravel had 33 saves for Halifax.

The Storm went 1-for-6 on their power play while the Mooseheads were scoreless on six power plays.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League finalist Halifax leads the tournament at 2-0 while the Ontario Hockey League champion Storm are at 1-1. QMJHL champion Rouyn Noranda Raiders and Western Hockey League champion Prince Albert Raiders are both at 0-1 and are to play one another Monday at 7 p.m.

The Storm and Prince Albert are to clash Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the final round-robin game for both teams.
