Lourdes Crusaders sprint to another senior victory

GUELPH – The Lourdes Crusaders might be the fastest team in the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball league.

The Crusaders used their speed to hand the Ross Royals a 62-51 setback Thursday at Lourdes.

“We try to be,” Lourdes coach Mike Finoro said. “We try to push the ball. They’re strong when they’re creating in transition for themselves and for each other so we try to say ‘Sprint places.’”

The Crusaders led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and stretched that advantage 33-18 by halftime. The hosts were up 44-31 after the third quarter.

Lourdes is a young squad in senior terms with several players moving up this season from last season’s junior championship-winning team.

“We’re growing, but we definitely have a lot of room for improvement still,” Finoro said. “We’re still pretty much at the start of our journey. They’re coming along, but we still have a long way to go.”

Sebastian Porcellato led Lourdes with 18 points while Will Vandenheuvel had 11, Abraham Kayeye 10 and Geeth Kenneth six.

Cole Miller collected 17 for Ross while Sebsatian Perizzolo-Furminger had 10 and Malcolm Bair collected eight.

Centennial Spartans lead the league at 5-1 while the Centre Wellington Falcons are at 4-1 and both Lourdes and the St. James Lions are at 4-2. Ross is at 3-3 while the Guelph CVI Green Gaels are at 2-4, Orangeville Bears are at 1-5 and Bishop Macdonell Celtics are at 0-5.

With the tightness of the league at the top of the standings shows that there aren’t many easy games this season.

“That’s a good thing,” Finoro said. “The good thing is that it is preparing us for what’s to come in the playoffs. Every game you have to go into it with the mindset that it’s going to be a dogfight. It’s going to be competitive and you have to come ready to play no matter who your opponent is.”
