MacMillan, Clark Gryphon athletes of the week

GUELPH – Field hockey veteran Katherine MacMillan and baseball rookie pitcher Dylan Clark are the Guelph Gryphons MUSCLE MLK Athletes of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.

Fifth-year All-Canadian MacMillan struck for four goals and two assists as the Gryphs opened their OUA field hockey season with an 8-1 win over the Western Mustangs Sunday at Toronto to be named Guelph’s female athlete of the week. Three of the goals came on penalty corners as MacMillan raised her career total with the Gryphs to 35 goals. She had 16 last year when she was second in the OUA league and second in U Sports.

The Gryphs have a trio of games in Kingston this weekend as they’re to play Queen’s and McGill Saturday and York Sunday.

Clark was Guelph’s male athlete of the week after he pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout as the Gryphs blanked the Waterloo Warriors 6-0 in the seven-inning game of Saturday’s season-opening doubleheader at Hastings Stadium. Clark transferred to Guelph after spending two years at Monroe Community College of Rochester, N.Y., where he posted an overall 4-1 record with 5.52 earned-run average. There he allowed 30 hits in 29 1/3 innings and had 22 strikeouts.

The Gryphs won three of four games at home last weekend as they swept Waterloo Saturday and split with Laurier Sunday. The Gryphs are to continue their season at Ajax this weekend with games against Ryerson and Ottawa Saturday and Toronto Sunday.
