Marlins take eliminator races at Dash for Cash meet
GUELPH – Members of the Guelph Marlin Aquatic Club swam away with the breaststroke eliminator races to complete the second day of the club’s TD Dash for Cash meet at the Gryphon Aquacentre Saturday night.
The eliminators are just as they sound – elimination races. There’s seven races in all in each of the male and female eliminators. They start with a swimmer in each of the pool’s eight lanes and the slowest in each heat gets to go cool down and watch the remaining races.
The winners were the fastest qualifiers in their category, 17-year-old Abigail McDonald taking the female eliminator and 15-year-old Russell Burton winning the male eliminator.
McDonald defeated Bridget Manzella of Mississauga in the seventh heat while Burton defeated clubmate James Steele.
The male event was guaranteed of having a winner with local connections after Mississauga’s Charles Marcial was ousted after the first heat. That left just Marlin and Guelph Gryphon swimmers.
The other Marlins in the male eliminator were Jaxon Konrad, Marcus Beckstead-Holman and Liam Baena while the Gryphons were James McCole and William Boulter.
GMAC’s Hanna Schlotzhauer and Gabriella Pollock also competed in the female eliminator along with Hanna Gazzard and Paige Piche of Trent, Alexandra Klapuschak of Mississauga and Emma Clarke of Toronto’s Lakeshore Swim Club.
The meet is to conclude with two sessions Sunday.
