McGill blanks Gryphon hockey women in preseason

MONTREAL – The defending national champion Guelph Gryphons suffered a 3-0 loss to the McGill Martlets Sunday in a women’s hockey preseason match that involved the two teams that battled in last season’s U Sports national championship game.

Two goals 16 seconds apart late in the first period gave McGill a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The other goal for the Martlets came in the third period.

Lea Dumais, Cassidy Bell and Kellyane Lecours collected single goals for the Martlets while assists were awarded to Jade Downie-Landry, Olivia Ramos, Laura Jardin and Marika Labrecque.

Amanda Hadwen stopped all 18 shots fired her way for the shutout for McGill.

Aurore Beaulieu had 35 saves in net for the Gryphs.

The Martlets outshot the Gryphs 38-18 and both teams were scoreless on two power plays.

The game featured 29 players who suited up for last season’s championship match, 16 for McGill.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 1-1-0 in their preseason.

The Gryphs are to continue their preseason play Thursday with a game against the Waterloo Warriors Thursday at Waterloo’s Columbia Icefields Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
