McLeod, Shamrocks end losing skid with shutout win

CAMBRIDGE – Gavin McLeod turned aside all 40 shots he faced as the Hespeler Shamrocks put an end to a six-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Port Dover Sailors in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

It was Hespeler’s first shutout victory of the season.

McLeod, one of the busiest goaltenders in the league, has made 649 saves this season. The win was his third of the season (one was in a shootout) and only Dalton McBride (769) of Dunnville Mudcats and Connor Ogg (674) of the Hamilton Huskies Junior Blues have made more saves.

The Shamrocks scored once in the first period and twice in the third for the victory.

Dylan Beitz, Devin Schneider and Austin Reilly each had a goal while Noah Trudeau, Tony Tikel, Reilly and Matthew Tonner each had an assist.

The Shamrocks were outshot 40-36 and they went 1-for-7 on their power play while Port Dover was scoreless on seven power plays.

Andrew Hawkins took the loss in net for the Sailors. He had 33 saves.

Hespeler is eighth in the Bloomfield Division at 6-29-1-1 while Port Dover is sixth at 11-20-2-3.

The Shamrocks, who are to host the second-place Grimsby Peach Kings (29-4-1-0) Saturday at 8:30 p.m., have five games left on their regular season
