Men’s hockey Gryphons nipped in Steel Blade Classic
ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered a pair of goals late in the third period as they were handed a 3-1 setback by the Brock Badgers in the annual OUA men’s hockey preseason Steel Blade Classic game at the Meridian Centre.
Mark Raycroft scored the Gryphon goal in the second period.
That goal tied the score after Connor Brown had tallied in the first for Brock.
Ryan Burton struck for the go-ahead goal for Brock late in the third and Brown added an empty-net goal to complete the scoring.
The Badgers outshot the Gryphs 30-24.
Andrew Masters played the entire game in net for the Gryphs while Logan Thompson played the first half for Brock and Mario Cavallaire played the second half.
The Gryphs have a win and a loss in preseason play that is to continue Thursday with the Ridgetown Classic against the Windsor Lancers at Ridgetown’s East Kent Memorial Arena.
The Gryphs are to play three more preseason games after that game before opening their regular season Oct. 11 at home against the Ryerson Rams.
