Merkley sparks Storm to win over London

LONDON – Ryan Merkley collected for a goal and two assists to power the Guelph Storm to a 3-2 victory over the London Knights in OHL play Sunday at Budweiser Gardens.

Merkley assisted on two first-period goals and scored the eventual game winner in the second minute of the second period.

The Storm led 2-1 at the end of the first period before the teams scored a goal apiece in the second.

Liam Hawel and Isaac Ratcliffe had the other goals for Guelph while Cam Hillis had two assists and James McEwan and Hawel had one apiece.

Billy Moskal and Evan Bouchard scored for London while assists went to Liam Foudy, Bouchard, Tyler Rollo and Nathan Dunkley.

Anthony Popovich had 25 saves for the win for the Storm while Jordan Kooy made 29 saves in the London net.

The Storm outshot the Knights 32-27 and went 1-for-2 on their power play while London went 1-for-4.

With the win, the Storm (24-19-1-3) is in a tie for fifth in the Western Conference with the Saginaw Spirit (24-19-4-0) while London (26-18-2-2) is fourth, four points ahead. Windsor Spitfires (23-20-2-2) are seventh, two points behind, and the Owen Sound Attack (20-19-2-2) is eighth, five points behind.

Next game for the Storm is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Hershey Centre against the Mississauga Steelheads who are eighth in the Eastern Conference at 22-24-0-1.
