Minto 81’s connected to increase their lead in series

PALMERSTON – The Minto 81’s added to their lead in their best-of-seven Western Ontario Athletic Association senior AA men’s hockey quarter-final playoff series with a 6-2 victory over the Shelburne Muskies Sunday night at the Palmerston arena.

The win gave Minto a 2-0 lead in the series.

Minto led 4-2 at the end of the first period before adding single goals in the second and third periods.

Tommy Hoogaars struck for a hat trick for the 81’s while Austin Gaboury, Francois Cote and Kalob Witzell each scored once. Brady Anderson and Tyler Harrison each had two assists while Jordan Delaurier, Jamison Buck, Adam Kawawlec and Wade Pfeffer picked up single assists.

Ty McCallum and Blake Lovell scored the goals for Shelburne while Jamie Bennett and Luke Richardson each had an assist.

Shots on net were not reported. The 81’s went 2-for-9 on their power play while the Muskies were scoreless on five power plays.

Ben Nelson picked up the win in the Minto net. Starter Edward Davey’s game lasted just over six and a half minutes until he was replaced by Malcolm Young after allowing a pair of goals. Young gave up four and took the loss.

Third game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Shelburne’s Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex. Fourth game is slated for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
