Minto 81’s downed by Petrolia to begin their season

PETROLIA – The Minto 81’s were handed a 7-4 setback by the Petrolia Squires in their Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league season opener Friday night at the Greenwood arena.

Petrolia led 3-2 at the end of the first period and 5-3 after the second.

Collin Hartwick struck for a pair of goals for the 81’s while Tommy Hoogaars and Wade Pfeffer each scored once. Riley O’Connell collected two assists while single assists were awarded to Denver Hill, Jake Pleon, Shayne Ross, Hoogaars, Adam Kawawlec and Pfeffer.

Owen Rogers netted a pair of goals for Petrolia with single goals being added by John Montgomery, T.J. Harris, Steve Farlow, Jacob McPhail and Nathan Mater. Farlow, Kole Keating and Corey Pawley each had two assists while Jesse Ferguson, Harris, Cole Mayo, Tyler Gauthier, McPhail and Matthew Slotwinski had one apiece.

Petrolia outshot the 81’s 45-37.

Ben Nelson took the loss in net for Minto despite making 38 saves. Brandon Campbell had 37 saves to get the win for Petrolia.

Minto is to host the Clinton Radars in their home opener Oct. 12 at the Palmerston arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
