
Minto 81’s drop Tavistock to open quarter-final series
TAVISTOCK – The Minto 81’s opened their WOAA Senior AA men’s hockey playoffs with a 5-2 victory over the Tavistock Royals Saturday night at the Tavistock arena.
A pair of goals 20 seconds apart midway through the first period put the 81’s ahead for good.

Minto led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 5-1 after the second.
Riley Cribbin led the 81’s with a pair of goals while singletons were netted by Jack Burkett, Caleb Warren and Shawn Lantz. Blair Buchart assisted on three of the goals while Cole Scott and Cribbin each had two assists and Stephen Gibson, Lantz and Trent Verbeek had one each.
Collin Hartwick and Devon Kropf responded with a goal apiece for Tavistock. Assists went to Trevor Sauder and Geoff Killing.
Tavistock outshot the 81’s 39-25 while Minto went 2-for-t on its power play and the host Royals were scoreless on two power plays. Tavistock did score a shorthanded marker.
Jonathan Reinhardt had 37 saves for the 81’s while Zack Shomphe had 20 for Tavistock.
Minto finished the regular season tied for third place at 15-5-0-1 while Tavistock was fifth at 13-6-1-1. Minto was placed fourth as the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks won the tie-breaker for third.
The 81’s, who had to forfeit a game that was rescheduled to a midweek date with the seventh-place Petrolia Squires (12-9-0-0) with two weeks to go in the regular season, finished a point behind the runner-up Ripley Wolves who were at 15-4-0-2.
Second game of the best-of-five quarter-final series is set for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Palmerston arena while the third game is to be held there Friday at 8:30 p.m.
