Minto 81’s top Elora Rocks for first win of season

ELORA – The Minto 81’s collected their first win of the WOAA senior men’s hockey league season Friday night when they handed the Elora Rocks a 5-3 setback at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the 81’s squeezed out a 4-3 lead by the end of the second.

Adam Kawawlec scored the eventual game-winner for Minto with 69 seconds to go in the second period. The 81’s added the lone goal of the third.

Collin Hartwick, Tommy Hoogaars, Austin Gaboury and Kalob Witzell scored the other goals for Minto while assists went to Hoogaars, Kawawlec, Wade Pfeffer, Gaboury and Jake Pleon.

Ben Nelson was in net for the win for Minto.

Klayton Hoelscher had two goals and an assist for the Rocks while Ryan Maksymyk had a goal and an assist. Brock West also had two assists while Brett Coverdale and Shawn Lantz also had one assist apiece.

Austin Hoegy faced 37 shots in the Elora net.

The result leaves Minto at 1-3-0-0 and the Rocks at 3-2-0-0.

The Rocks are to host the Durham Thundercats (1-1-0-1) Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.

Next game for the 81’s is Nov. 3 when they’re to host the Tavistock Royals (1-1-0-1) at the Palmerston arena. Game time is 2 p.m.
