Minto 81’s win away from berth in AA semifinals
PALMERSTON – The Minto 81’s are a win away from advancing to the Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s AA hockey semifinals.
The 81’s scored twice in the final minute of regulation time to hand the Shelburne Muskies a 4-2 setback Sunday night at the Palmerston arena. The victory gives Minto a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven quarter-final.
The teams scored a goal apiece in a 21-second span in the first period before the 81’s added the lone goal of the second, scoring 1:22 into the period. Shelburne tied it up at 6:08 of the third and the score stayed knotted until the final minute.
Wade Pfeffer with 59 seconds to play and Tyler Harrison with five seconds to go picked up the last-minute goals for the 81’s while Francois Cote and Zach Graham scored earlier in the game. Jamison Buck had two assists while Harrison, Collin Hartwick, Adam Kawawlec and Shawn Lantz each had one.
Jamie Bennett and Blake Lovell connected for the goals for Shelburne while single assists went to Ty McCallum, Luke Richardson, Jeff Brett and Kyle Hunter.
Ben Nelson picked up the win in the Minto net while Malcolm Young was tagged with the loss in the Shelburne net.
Shots on goal were not reported.
The hosts were assessed 12 minutes in penalties while Shelburne was whistled for 38 including two 10-minute misconducts – one for unsportsmanlike conduct and the other for head contact.
The 81’s had one power-play goal as did the Muskies.
Fifth game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex in Shelburne. Game time is 8 p.m.
If a sixth game is necessary, it’s scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
