Mohawks bounce back from slow start to claim win
ST. CATHARINES – With one game left in their regular season, the Elora Mohawks know they can finish in any of the top three positions in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League’s Western Conference standings.
They also know that all they have to do is beat the eighth-place Wallaceburg Red Devils Sunday night at the Elora and District Community Centre to claim top spot in the conference.

Saturday at the Canada Games Park arena on the Brock University campus, the Mohawks surrendered the first four goals of the game before rallying for a 9-5 win over the St. Catharines Athletics.
That result ensured the Athletics of a fourth-place finish in the conference and a date with the fifth-place Guelph Regals in the conference quarter-finals that are to start next week.
While the Mohawks trailed 4-0 five and a half minutes into the game, they battled back to tie it 4-4 by the end of the first period and lead 7-5 after the second.
Sam Dramnitzke led Elora with two goals and three assists while Brett Harrison had a goal and three assists. They’re second and third in the scoring race behind Zane Dalpe of the Windsor Clippers who has 56 goals and 42 assists for 98 points. Dramnitzke has 96 (35 goals-61 assists) and Harrison has 93 (43 goals-50 assists). The Mohawks have a game to go while Windsor has finished its regular season.
Getting one goal apiece for the Mohawks Saturday were Jabe Verbeek, Chris Rathwell, Ethen Wellings, Nick Aitchison, Trae Verbeek and Matt Allen. Jayden Bushey had three assists while Jabe Verbeek, Rathwell, Wellings, Aitchison, Allen and goalkeeper Nathan Whittom each had one.
Christian Lefeuvre and Jaden Patterson scored twice apiece for St. Catharines while Max Brook had the other goal.
The Mohawks outshot the Athletics 45-43 and went 2-for-8 on their power play while St. Catharines went 3-for-11.
Cecil Jacobs started in net for the Mohawks and had four saves before being replaced by Whittom after the third goal for St. Catharines at 4:34 of the first. Whittom went the rest of the way and picked up the win with 34 saves.
Mike Napoli had 36 saves in the St. Catharines net.
The Mohawks (16-3-0) and Windsor (16-4-0) are tied for first in the Western Conference. If they finish in a two-way tie for first, Windsor gets top spot due to beating Elora both times the teams met this season.
The Hamilton Bengals (15-4-0) are third and can move into a three-way tie with a win over the seventh-place Owen Sound North Stars (9-9-1) Sunday afternoon in Owen Sound.
If Windsor, Hamilton and Elora finish in a tie, they’ll be placed in that order due to the results between the three teams this season. The Clippers would be first at 3-1, Hamilton second at 2-2 and Elora third at 1-3.
It could be a temporary three-way tie as the Mohawks are to host Wallaceburg Sunday at 7 p.m.
If Elora finishes first, they’ll play either Wallaceburg (6-13-0) or the Point Edward Pacers (5-14-0) in the conference quarter-finals. If Wallaceburg and Point Edward finish in a tie for eighth, the Pacers would win the tie-breaker thanks to sweeping their two games with the Red Devils this season.
