Mohawks bounce back in third to win home opener

ELORA – A third-period comeback carried the Elora Mohawks to an 11-8 victory over the Niagara Thunderhawks Saturday night at the Elora and District Community Centre in the Ontario junior B lacrosse league home opener for the Mohawks.

The hosts scored the final five goals of the game to claim the victory. They trailed 8-6 with 16 minutes to play, but had the game’s scoring wrapped up with more than five and a half minutes to go.

The hosts led 4-3 at the end of the first period, but trailed 7-6 at the end of the second thanks Niagara’s four goals in the first seven minutes of the period.

Trent Spear hit for fur goals for the Mohawks while Nathan Bolger and Brett Harrison scored twice apiece. Single goals were netted by Sam Dramnitzke, Hyatt Welsh and Dean Sealey while Logan Cameron and Jayden Bushey each had three assists. Bolger, Spear and Welsh gathered two assists apiece while Justin Beaulieu, Harrison and Zack Cameron each had one assist.

Devin Napolean powered Niagara as he had three goals and four assists. The other goals were scored by Nathan Maloney, Chris Weier, Kent Baker-Printup, Trent Hunter and Michael Wilson while Aidan Buis, Matt Mines and Baker-Printup each had two assists and Joseph LaForm, Maloney and Connor Watson each had one.

The Mohawks outshot the Thunderhawks 37-33 and went 1-for-3 on their power play while Niagara went 3-for-8.

Ryan Fitzgerald started in net for the Mohawks, but was relieved by Sam Hadley after Niagara’s seventh goal. Fitzgerald had 14 saves and winning goalie Hadley had 11 saves. Josiah LaForm took the loss for Niagara. He had 26 saves.

The Mohawks lead the Mid West Division at 2-1-1 while the game was the season opener for Niagara.

Elora is to host the Owen Sound North Stars (1-2-1) Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
