Mohawks clip Windsor to finish atop Mid West Division
ELORA – The Elora Mohawks grabbed a six-goal league then held off the Windsor Clippers Sunday night at the Elora and District Community Centre to claim a 9-6 win and top spot in the Ontario junior B lacrosse league’s Mid West Division.
The Mohawks led 4-2 at the end of the first period and 9-3 a period later before Windsor closed the gap a little in the third.
Zack Cameron struck for four goals for the Mohawks while single goals were netted by Tyler Healey, Hyatt Welsh, Ryan Mueller, Dean Sealey and Brett Harrison. Sealey set up five of the goals while Cameron, Welsh and Harrison each had two assists and Jonah White, Owen Ristov, Jacob Black, Trent Spear and goaltender Ryan Fitzgerald each had one.
Zane Dalpe tallied four times for Windsor while Brett Barnes and Blain Wallace also scored. Barnes and Wallace each had two assists while Kolton Couvillon, Josh Rosa and Matt Fraser had one apiece.
Fitzgerald turned aside 44 shots for the win while Carson Hebner faced 60 shots in the Windsor net.
The Mohawks went 3-for-8 on their power play and held the Clippers scoreless on three power plays.
The game completed the regular season for both teams. Elora finishes first in the Mid West Division at 16-3-1, two points ahead of the Hamilton Bengals. Windsor is first in the Far West at 13-5-2, the only team in the division to qualify for the playoffs.
The Mohawks also finish second in the Western Conference and are to play the St. Catharines Spartans (9-10-1) in the best-of-five conference quarter-finals. Dates for the series are to be announced.
