Mohawks done in by St. Catharines’ five-goal outbreaks

ST. CATHARINES – The winning streak for the Elora Mohawks ended at nine games Friday night as they were edged 10-9 by the St. Catharines Athletics at the Canada Games Sportsplex.

Elora’s win streak started with a home victory over the Welland Generals April 30 and included seven wins at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex. They have three home games remaining on their scheduled.

Friday, St. Catharines rallied for the win by scoring the final five goals of the game. They’d also scored five in a row in the first period.

The Mohawks struck for the first three goals of the game, but trailed 5-3 at the end of the first period. There were four goals in the second, all scored by Elora for a 7-5 lead and they added to it with the first two goals of the third before the Athletics went on their final rally.

Keegan Detweiler had a pair of goals for Elora while singletons were netted by Carter Coffey, Peyton Drone, Jabe Verbeek and Brinley Wilson. JJ Lavigne, Verbeek and Wilson each had two assists while single assists went to Owen Tovell, Coffey, Drone, Brock Redwood, Owen Williams, Detweiler and goalkeeper Sam Forbes.

Ryan Andrews and Landon Jeckles connected for two goals apiece for St. Catharines while Cody McNeil, Jack Parker, Trent Mooradian, Adam Ponting, Colton Armitage and Ian Kohut tallied once each. Parker had four assists while Mooradian had three and Ponting had two. Getting one assist apiece were Andrews, Armitage, Jeckles, Kohut, Colin Walters and Ben Smellie.

St. Catharines outshot Elora 42-30 and went 1-for-3 on its power play while the Mohawks were scoreless on six power plays.

Forbes had 32 saves for the Mohawks while Mike Napoli had 21 for the Athletics.

The Mohawks fall to 10-2-0, but remain second in the Western Conference behind the Six Nations Rebels who are unbeaten at 13-0-0. Guelph Regals are third at 9-3-0 while St. Catharines is fourth at 8-2-0 and Windsor Clippers are fifth at 7-3-0.

Friday’s game was the first of four consecutive road games for the Mohawks as they are to play the Blue Devils (1-10-0) at London Sunday at 4 p.m., the Regals at Guelph’s Victoria Road arena Wednesday at 8 p.m. and the North Stars (5-5-0) at Owen Sound Thursday at 8 p.m.
