Mohawks down St. Catharines to open playoffs
ELORA – Zack Cameron struck for five goals as he helped the Elora Mohawks open their Ontario junior B playoffs with a 12-9 victory over the St. Catharines Spartans Saturday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.
He scored three times in the second period as the Mohawks stretched a 2-1 advantage at the beginning of the period to an 8-5 lead at the period’s conclusion.
Ryan Mueller and Dawson Bolger each had a pair of goals for the hosts while Logan Cameron, Owen O’Donnell and Dean Sealey also scored. Sam Dramnitzke, Zack Cameron and Mueller each had three assists while Logan Cameron, Hyatt Welsh, Brett Harrison, Trent Spear and Sealey each had two assists.
Sam LeClair connected for five goals for St. Catharines while Tyler Kolodka tallied twice and Blake Halliday and Alex Gaston netted single goals. Mitchell Geoffrey, LeClair, Kolodka, Aaron Ward and Gaston each had two assists while Blair Pachereva, Halliday, Jacon Edmands and Peyton McIntosh each had one.
The Mohawks outshot the Spartans 61-39 and went 3-for-7 on their power play while St. Catharines went 4-for-6.
Ryan Fitzgerald stopped 30 shots for the win in net for Elora while Adam Brennan had 49 saves for the Spartans.
Game 2 of the best-of-five series is set for Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Thorold arena.
