Mohawks drop Wallaceburg for sixth win in a row

WALLACEBURG – The Elora Mohawks claimed their sixth consecutive victory Saturday as they downed the Wallaceburg Red Devils 13-2 at the Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.

The Mohawks actually came from behind for the win as they surrendered the opening goal of the game 62 seconds into the contest. The host Red Devils also scored the first goal of the third period, but Elora led 3-1 at the end of the first and 9-1 after the second.

JJ Lavigne connected for four goals for the Mohawks while Connor Willmets had a hat trick and the Verbeeks – Jabe and Trae – scored twice each. Tobias Wilson and Owen Moore added single goals while Brinley Wilson had four assists, Keegan Detweiler had three and Jabe Verbeek and Willmets had two apiece. Getting one assist apiece were goalkeeper Xavier Demichele, Lavigne, Terrance Barrina, Brock Redwood, Troy Hall, Tobias Wilson, Ewan Mackie, Moore and Curtis Dietrich.

Mason Myers-Whiteye scored in the first period for Wallaceburg while Notah Hopkins had a shorthanded goal in the third. Colton Noah assisted on both goals while Cohen Veenstra and Kaelen Smith each had one assist.

The Mohawks outshot Wallaceburg 66-22 and went 2-for-6 on their power play while the Red Devils were scoreless on three power plays.

Demichele had 20 saves in net for the win for the Mohawks while Mason Jacobs had 53 saves for Wallaceburg.

The Mohawks are second in the Western Conference at 7-1-0. Six Nations Rebels lead the conference at 8-0-0 while the Guelph Regals are third at 6-2-0. They’re followed by the Hamilton Bengals (5-2-0), St. Catharines Athletics (4-1-0), Windsor Clippers (4-2-0), Cambridge Highlanders (4-3-0), Owen Sound Northstars, London Blue Devils and Wallaceburg all at 1-5-0, Welland Generals (0-7-0) and Point Edward Pacers (0-8-0).

Next up for the Mohawks is a three-game homestand at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex in Fergus as they’re to host Cambridge Thursday at 8 p.m., Windsor May 21 at 3 p.m. and Hamilton May 25 at 8 p.m.
