Mohawks dropped in first game of Western final

HAGERSVILLE – The Elora Mohawks yielded a run of four consecutive goals in the third period as the Six Nations Rebels took the opening game of their Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League Western Conference final 11-6 Friday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

While Elora never led in the game, it had been close until the third period spree.

Six Nations led 3-2 at the end of the first period and 6-5 after the second and 10-5 with three minutes to play.

The Mohawks failed to take advantage of the numerous power-play opportunities they had while the Rebels were a perfect 4-for-4 on their power play. Elora had three goals while they were playing with a manpower advantage, but they were on their power play 15 times. And they surrendered a pair of shorthanded goals.

Cole Spear struck for four goals for the Mohawks while Kurtis Woodland and Klayton Hoelscher also scored. Tyrus Rehanek had four assists while Spear had two and Woodland, Hoelscher, Noah Lebar, Hyatt Welsh and Ryan Mueller had one apiece.

Gates Abrams had a hat trick for Six Nations and Tanner Baldin and Chayton King netted two goals apiece. Adding single goals were Kahn General, Riley Miller, Mason Hill and Wes Whitlow. General set up five of the goals while Miller and Garret Vyse-Squire each had three assists. Justin Martin, Kobe Whitcomb and goalie Keegan Thomas had two each and Baldin had one.

The Rebels outshot the Mohawks 46-45. Landon Kells was in net for Elora while Thomas was in net for Six Nations.

Second game of the best-of-five series is set for Sunday at the Elora and District Community Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
