Mohawks dropped in their season opener

HAGERSVILLE – The defending national champion Elora Mohawks opened their 2019 Ontario junior B lacrosse league season with a 21-6 loss to the Six Nations Rebels Friday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

The Mohawks defeated the Rebels in the playoffs last season on their way to the Ontario and Canadian championship wins. However, 12 players who were on Elora’s playoff roster of 28 last season are not back this year. Of the 16 returnees who are listed on Elora’s roster, seven played in Friday’s game and the Mohawks also had Jayden Bushey in their lineup after he spent last season with the Guelph Regals.

Six Nations scored four goals in a span of one minute and 24 seconds midway through the first period to take control of the game. The Rebels led 8-2 at the end of the first period and 15-5 after the second.

Logan Cameron had a pair of goals for Elora while single goals were netted by Sam Dramnitzke, Hayden Brassard, Nathan Bolger and Trent Spear. Bushey, Jabe Verbeek and Hyatt Welsh each had two assists while Dramnitzke, Mitch Taylor, Spear and Dean Sealey had one apiece.

Weylon Abrams and Marshall Powless connected for five goals apiece for Six Nations while Justin Martin, Wes Whitlow, Chayton King and Sidney Powless tallied twice apiece and Daylen Hill, Owen Martin and Tycie Cowan each scored once. Marshall Powless had eight assists while Whitlow had six, Austin Giles four, Abrams, Mason Hill, Daylen Hill, King and Sidney Powless three apiece, Owen Martin two and Colby Martin, Justin Martin, Cal Hill and Jesse Longboat one each.

Sam Hadley took the loss in net for the Mohawks while Cal Hill picked up the win for the Rebels who outshot Elora 39-37.

The Mohawks went 1-for-7 on their power play while the Rebels scored on their only power play. Elora was assessed 18 minutes in penalties, 35 less than Six Nations.

Next game for the Mohawks is April 21 at 7 p.m. when they’re to play the St. Catharines Spartans at Thorold.
