Mohawks finish regular season with win over Owen Sound

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks wrapped up the regular-season portion of their Ontario junior B lacrosse league season Sunday night with a 12-4 victory over the Owen Sound North Stars at the Elora and District Community Centre.

Elora led 4-1 at the end of the first period and 9-4 at the end of the second.

Kurtis Woodland fired home five goals for the Mohawks while Josh Rex had a pair of goals and singletons were added by Cole Spear, Hyatt Welsh, Klayton Hoelscher, Owen O’Donnell and Tyrus Rehanek. Hoelscher collected five assists and Spear and Woodland each set up three goals. Welsh, Mitch Taylor and Rehanek had two assists apiece and Dean Sealey, Rex, Kevin Hutchison, Mason Noble and Ryan Mueller each had one assist.

Scoring for Owen Sound were Dan Kitto, Hayden Coulter, Mike Fiegehen and Spencer Elder. Brody Caskenette and Noah Rouse each had two assists and Elder had one.

Elora outshot Owen Sound 46-37 and went 3-for-5 on its power play while the North Stars went 1-for-7.

Landon Kells stopped 11 shots in each period for the win in net for the Mohawks while Beckham Georgiou had 34 saves in the loss for Owen Sound.

The Mohawks finish first in the Mid West Division and tied for second in the Western Conference with a 17-3-0 record. The Mohawks are tied with the Windsor Clippers, but Elora will win the tie-breaker thanks to a 5-4 win at Windsor April 21 in the second game of the season for the Mohawks.

Owen Sound finishes third in the Mid West Division and ninth in the Western Conference with a 5-14-1 record. They finished four points out of a playoff berth.

This year’s record for the Mohawks is an improvement of three wins over last season’s record when they were 14-6-0.

The Mohawks are to play the seventh-place Niagara Thunderhawks (10-10-0) in the best-of-five conference quarter-finals. Elora defeated Niagara 11-8 in its home opener April 26 in the teams’ only meeting of the season.

Playoff dates have not been set.

The Mohawks will enter the playoffs on a six-game winning streak.
