Mohawks get defensive to topple Orangeville
ELORA – The Elora Mohawks held the Orangeville Northmen scoreless in the first and third periods to register a 5-2 victory in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play at the Elora and District Community Centre Sunday night.
The Mohawks scored two goals of their own in each of the first and second periods for the win. Orangeville outscored the Mohawks 2-1 in the second period.
Cole Spear scored twice for Elora while Josh Rex, Ryan Mueller and Jack Francis scored once each. Kurtis Woodland had four assists while Hyatt Welsh had three and Klayton Hoelscher and Mason Noble had one apiece.
Brock Giles and Liam Smith scored for Orangeville while Brett Draper assisted on both goals. Tanner Buck also had an assist.
The Mohawks outshot the Northmen 52-47 and went 2-for-3 on their power play while holding Orangeville scoreless on six power plays.
Landon Kells made 45 saves for the win in net for the Mohawks while Daniel Tanner took the loss with 47 saves in the Orangeville net.
The Mohawks lead the Mid West Division at 15-3-0 while Orangeville is second at 10-7-0. Both teams have qualified for the playoffs.
The Mohawks are to wrap up their regular season with a pair of games at the Elora and District Community Centre next weekend. They’re to host the Welland Generals (1-16-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. and Orangeville Sunday at 7 p.m.
