Mohawks hang on to nip St. Catharines

ST. CATHARINES – The Elora Mohawks scored all four goals of the second period and then hung on to edge the St. Catharines Spartans 7-6 in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Friday night at the Merriton arena.

St. Catharines led 3-2 at the end of the first period before Elora’s second-period scoring domination put the Mohawks ahead 6-3. They extended the gap with a goal early in the third, but St. Catharines scored three times in the final 12 and a half minutes of the game to complete the scoring.

Ryan Mueller had two goals and two assists to lead the Mohawks while single goals were added by Klayton Hoelscher, Hyatt Welsh, Nathan Bolger, Kevin Hutchison and Kurtis Woodland. Welsh also had two assists while Dean Sealey, Bolger, Hutchison, Woodland, Hoelscher and Josh Rex had one apiece.

Connor Aquanno collected two goals and two assists for the Spartans while Adam Kirchmayer also had two goals and Peyton McIntosh and Sam LeClair each had one goal and one assist. Aaron Ward gathered two assists and John Kit, Devon Spiers and Reid Edmands each had one.

St. Catharines outshot Elora 28-25 and went 2-for-11 on its power play while the Mohawks went 3-for-7. The Mohawks also had two shorthanded goals.

Matt Humphrey was the winning goalkeeper for the Mohawks while Tyson McCool took the loss for St. Catharines. The former Guelph Regals goalie stopped 14 of 19 shots after replacing starter Dylan Busby-Carver in the first period.

The win kept the Mohawks unbeaten with six wins in as many league outings. The Spartans have lost all four of their outings.

The game was also the first of five consecutive road games for the Mohawks. They’re to play the Orangeville Northmen (3-1-0) at the Alder Street Recreation Centre Tuesday at 8 p.m.
