Mohawks hit early to start whitewash of Welland

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks struck for two goals in the first two minutes of the game as they headed to a 24-2 victory over the Welland Generals in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Saturday at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The Mohawks had a string of 16 consecutive goals in the game. They led 10-1 at the end of the first period and 22-1 at the end of the second.

Brett Harrison connected for five goals for the Mohawks while Klayton Hoelscher scored four times. Ryan Mueller had a hat trick while Cole Spear, Kurtis Woodland, Mason Noble and Tyrus Rehanek each had two goals and Bo Columbus, Jack Francis, Josh Rex and Nathan Bolger added the other goals. Woodland and Spear each had seven assists while Harrison, Rex and Hoelscher each had four, Rehanek had three and Columbus, Cam Coughlin, Francis, goalie Matt Humphrey and Mueller each had one assist.

Bailey Fournier-Higgins and Talon Badawey scored for Welland with help from Justin Porga and Mitchell Geoffroy.

The Mohawks outshot Welland 71-20 and went 1-for-2 on their power play while Welland was scoreless on its lone power play.

Humphrey had 18 saves for the win in net for Elora while Justin Rombough was charged with the loss. He made 23 saves before giving way to Matt Hines early in the second. Hines made 24 saves during his stint.

Elora (16-3-0) and Welland (1-18-0) each have a game to go to complete their regular seasons. The Mohawks are to host the Owen Sound North Stars (5-14-1) Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
