Mohawks nip Bengals in OT to clinch playoff berth

ELORA – Jabe Verbeek’s goal in overtime lifted the Elora Mohawks to a 9-8 victory over the Hamilton Bengals in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Sunday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The win also secured a playoff berth for the Western Conference-leading Mohawks.

The Mohawks had to come from behind for the win as they trailed 2-0 at the end of the first period, but led 3-2 four and a half minutes into the second period. The teams were tied 5-5 at the end of the second and 8-8 at the end of the third, the Mohawks scoring twice in the final 67 seconds of regulation time to fore the extra period.

Sam Dramnitzke led Elora with a four-goal outing while Nick Aitchison scored twice and single goals were netted by Jabe Verbeek, Matt Allen and Ethen Wellings. Allen assisted on three of the goals while Owen Moore and Brett Harrison each had two assists and Dramnitzke, Wellings, Tobias Wilson and goalkeeper Nathan Whittom had one apiece.

Clark Dunford and Blake Booth each scored twice for Hamilton while singletons were added by Sebi Reynolds, Liam Cole, Greg Love and Cooper Day-Allison.

The Mohawks outshot the Bengals 67-57 and went 4-for-12 on their power play while Hamilton went 1-for-7.

Whittom made 49 saves to get the win in net for the hosts while Karter Rominuk had 58 saves for Hamilton.

Elora leads the Western Conference at 12-1-0 while Hamilton is second at 10-3-0.

The Mohawks have a pair of games on the weekend. They’re to play the Welland Generals (0-12-0) at the Welland Arena Saturday at 7 p.m. and host the Guelph Regals (8-5-0) at the Elora and District Community Centre Sunday at 7 p.m.
