Mohawks nip Bengals to move to top of division
HAMILTON – Nathan Bolger’s goal in overtime Thursday night at Dave Andreychuk Arena lifted the Elora Mohawks to a 12-11 victory over the Hamilton Bengals and into first place in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League’s Mid West Division.
The Mohawks recovered from a 5-2 deficit early in the second period, aided by five power-play goals and a five-goal run in the middle frame. However, they needed a goal by Dean Sealey with 55 seconds to go in regulation time to force the extra period and they were also unsuccessful on a penalty shot in the extra period.
Hamilton led 4-2 at the end of the first period and the teams were tied 7-7 at the end of the second and 11-11 at the end of the third.
Bolger, Sam Dramnitzke, Ryan Mueller and Sealey netted two goals apiece for the Mohawks while Nick Aitchison, Tyler Healey, Owen Ristov and Trent Spear scored once each. Hyatt Welsh collected four assists while Logan Cameron, Sealey and Spear had three each and Aitchison, Bolger, Dramnitzke and Brett Harrison had one each.
Hamilton received two goals apiece from Tyson Allison, Tye Argent, Yvon Bolduc and Coltrane Tyson and one apiece from Tanner Brennecke, Braedon Saris and Ken Sproat. Bolduc had four assists while Allison had three, Brennecke, Luke Robinson and Saris had two each and Hunter Aggus, Argent and Tyson had one each.
The Mohawks outshot the Bengals 63-50 and went 5-for-10 on their power play while Hamilton went 2-for-5.
Ryan Fitzgerald started in net for the Mohawks, but was relieved by Sam Hadley after Hamilton’s fourth goal at 16:47 of the first. Hadley had 27 saves to get the win while Fitzgerald had 12 saves.
The Bengals also used both of their goalies. Lucas Nagy started and was pulled in favour of Mitch Dunham at 11:28 of the second period after Elora’s seventh goal of the game. Nagy had 23 saves and Dunham, who was tagged with the loss, had 28.
The win leaves Elora two points ahead of Hamilton atop the Mid West Division with five games to go in the regular season.
The Mohawks are to play twice this weekend as they’re to play the Point Edward Pacers Saturday at 7 p.m. at Point Edward arena and they’re to host the Bengals at the Elora Community Centre Saturday at 7 p.m.
