Mohawks nipped by Wallaceburg in series opener

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks surrendered a pair of goals less than a minute apart in the final nine minutes of the game as they were edged 9-8 by the Wallaceburg Red Devils in the opening game of their best-of-five Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League West Division semifinal Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

Wallaceburg broke a tie with 8:39 to go in regulation time and then gave itself a two-goal lead 55 seconds later. The Mohawks cut the gap to a single goal with their fifth power-play marker of the game with 6:18 to go, but that proved to be the final goal of the game.

Wallaceburg led 4-3 at the end of the first period in the closely-contested match and 6-5 after the second.

The squads had their special teams working as more than half of the goals came with players sitting in the penalty box. That included a stretch of eight consecutive special teams’ goals – four by each side.

The first two goals of that stretch were power-play goals by the Mohawks that put the hosts ahead 3-1. However, the Red Devils responded with their four special teams’ goals (three on their power play and the other one while playing shorthanded) to shoot ahead before Elora finished that streak of goals with a pair of power-play tallies to pull even again.

Cole Spear scored four times for the Mohawks, all on the power play, while Ryan Mueller had two goals and Kurtis Woodland and Hyatt Welsh had one apiece. Woodland assisted on five of the goals while Klayton Hoelscher had three assists, Josh Rex had two and Mitch Taylor, Tyrus Rehanek, Welsh, Mueller and Spear had one apiece.

Corey Lucier connected for two goals for Wallaceburg and single goals were added by Vern Hill, Tanner Cole, Carter Hastings, Brendan Johnston, Marshall Powless, Tyler Brown and Sidney Powless. Hill, Brown, Kyle Dawson and Sidney Powless each had two assists and Lucier, Hastings and Marshall Powless had one apiece.

The Red Devils outshot the Mohawks 56-43 while Elora went 5-for-11 on its power playt and Wallaceburg went 3-for-7.

Landon Kells made 47 saves, but took the loss in net for Elora while Brayden Bell had 35 saves to get the win for Wallaceburg.

Second game of the series is set for Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.
