Mohawks pull away for first win of season

THOROLD – The Elora Mohawks scored four consecutive goals in the second period and that proved to be the difference in the game as the Mohawks downed the St. Catharines Spartans 10-6 in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Sunday at the Thorold Community Arena.

The Mohawks got off to a fast start as the defending national champions led 5-1 at the end of the first period. However, St. Catharines scored three in a row to narrow the gap to a single goal midway through the second. The Mohawks followed with their four-goal outburst to add a little breathing space. The first three of those goals came in a span of 1:14.

Hyatt Welsh, Zack Cameron and Trent Spear scored twice apiece for the Mohawks while single goals were netted by Dean Sealey, Tyler Healey, Nathan Bolger and Logan Cameron. Sealey assisted on five of the goals while Nathan Bolger, Spear and Zack Cameron each had two assists and Kyle Detweiller and Sam Dramnitzke collected one apiece.

Connor Aquanno tallied twice for St. Catharines and Jacob McMillan, Mitchell Geoffroy, Reid Edmands and Alex Gaston rifled in a goal apiece. Blair Pachereva and Aaron Ward each had two assists and Nick Gicante, Peyton McIntosh, Owen Bachelor and Gaston each had one.

Elora out shot the Spartans 54-53 and went 4-for-7 on its power play while St. Catharines went 1-for-7. The Mohawks also had two shorthanded goals.

Ryan Fitzgerald picked up the win in net for the Mohawks while Bobby Morrison took the loss for St. Catharines.

The result leaves both teams at 1-1-0.

Next up for the Mohawks is their third consecutive road game to start the season as they’re to play the Guelph Regals at the Victoria Road arena Wednesday. Game time is 8 p.m.

The game is to be the season opener for the Regals.
