Mohawks rally from early deficit to double Hamilton

HAMILTON – The Elora Mohawks spotted the Hamilton Bengals a three-goal lead in the first eight minutes of their Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League match before roaring back to claim an 8-4 victory Thursday night at Hamilton’s Andreychuk Arena.

The Mohawks whittled the gap down to a single goal at 3-2 by the end of the first period and then shot ahead 5-3 by the end of the second.

The Bengals scored first in the third to get the margin down to a single goal, but Elora scored the final three goals of the game to preserve the victory.

JJ Lavigne, Keegan Detweiler and Connor Willmets scored twice apiece for the Mohawks while the Wilsons – Tobias and Brinley – netted single goals. Lavigne, Owen Moore and Willmets each had two assists while Tobias Wilson and Nate Renaud had one apiece.

Getting a goal apiece for Hamilton were Nathan Jones, Reed Allen, Cody Inness and Winston Bashford. Ben Dietrich and Inness each had two assists.

The Mohawks outshot the Bengals 56-44 and went 1-for-8 on their power play. They also held Hamilton scoreless on two power plays.

Xavier Demichele had 40 saves in the Elora net while Jaxon Longboat had 48 saves for Hamilton.

The win improves Elora’s record to 6-1-0 while Hamilton falls to 4-2-0.

The Mohawks are to play the Wallaceburg Red Devils (1-4-0) at Wallaceburg Saturday at 7 p.m.
